Children's Dentistry

Dr. Holly Baller and her dental team are always delighted to welcome children, and we honor the trust parents places in us to provide exceptional dentistry for their children. With gentle, reassuring treatment and care, we create a positive experience that sets kids up for happy, successful dental visits for years to come.

At Baller Dental & Orthodontics at Southlands, we have created a fun and welcoming environment for children, and they love their visits to our Aurora dental office. You won’t find a serious, formal dental office with rigid rules and expectations for a child’s behavior; instead, we offer a caring and supportive environment that embraces the individual personality of each child we treat.

Your Child’s First Dental Visit

Along with the American Dental Association, Dr. Holly Baller recommends that children have their first dental checkup when their first baby tooth appears. We call these "happy visits," and we find that some kids can’t wait to get in the dental chair while others need to be helped with a little gentle encouragement.

By meeting children on their level, Dr. Baller builds on their natural curiosity and gets them engaged in the process. Kids love getting a ride in the dental chair, looking at themselves in the little mirror, and checking out cool equipment like Mr. Thirsty.

Even if your child isn’t quite ready for a dental exam today, we have set the stage by creating a fun and positive environment where they can feel comfortable being themselves. As they get accustomed to the process, your child will become more receptive to teeth cleanings and other treatments as necessary.

At Baller Dental & Orthodontics at Southlands, it’s all about fun, positivity, and happy, joyful smiles!

Infant Oral Health

You can start being proactive with your baby’s dental care in infancy by gently wiping their gums with a gauze or soft washcloth after feedings to remove lingering bacteria. It’s a nice way to spend a few moments bonding with your baby, and it also gets them accustomed to the idea of oral care.

If you are breastfeeding and are frustrated because your baby has trouble latching on, the cause may be a frenulum that is too short or tight. There are two frenula; one is located under the tongue and one under the upper lip. If either is restricting movement, Dr. Baller performs a simple procedure called a frenectomy to correct it.

Dentistry for Children of All Ages

From baby teeth to braces and every stage in between, Dr. Baller and her team will be there for your little one. Protecting the integrity of baby teeth is crucial, and we recommend dental exams and cleanings every six months so that we can keep an eye on their development.

Preventive treatments like fluoride and dental sealants are great ways to stay a step ahead of cavities, and customized sports mouthguards protect their precious teeth from dental injuries.

Early Orthodontic Evaluation

Dr. Baller recommends an orthodontic evaluation for every child around age seven. This doesn’t mean your child will need braces; in fact, early treatment often allows us to take a more natural approach to straightening teeth.

Many children have benefitted from an orthodontic technique called Myobrace, which works with a child’s natural growth to minimize the need for braces in the future. Myobrace is customized to correct bad oral habits like mouth breathing or tongue thrusting by retraining muscles that may be the underlying cause of crooked teeth.

Frequently Asked Questions

Dr. Baller recommends bringing your child for their first dental visit by age one. It might be hard for you to imagine your darling baby in a dental chair, but relax–we’ve got this!

As a parent of three boys, Dr. Holly has hands-on experience understanding what children need to feel safe and happy. She values the unique nature of each child’s personality and believes that they deserve an individualized approach to their dental visits.

Your Child's First Dental Appointment

We call these early appointments “happy” visits because that’s how we want them to feel when they leave our dental office. As an experienced children’s dentist, Dr. Baller takes time to let children dictate the pace of the first visit and never push their boundaries. We are firm believers that there is always a way for every child’s visit to end on a positive note.

Baby teeth play a more significant role in a child’s dental development than many parents realize; they help your child learn how to form words and eat their first solid foods. Since baby teeth hold space for permanent teeth that will eventually emerge, we need to ensure that they stay healthy and intact until they come out on their own.

We Can’t Wait to Meet Your Child!

Our goal is to help your little one develop the confidence and trust to become a great dental patient as an adult. If it’s time to schedule your child’s first dental visit, please call our Aurora dental office—we can’t wait to meet you!
