Are You a Good Dental Implant Candidate?

Hello, Dr. Holly Baller here! Many of my patients come to Baller Dental & Ortho with questions about dental implants, especially whether they are good candidates. If you’re considering dental implants in Aurora, CO, here’s what you need to know to determine if they might be right for you.

  1. Good General Health — Ideal implant candidates have good overall health. Systemic conditions such as diabetes or heart disease do not automatically disqualify you, but they must be well-managed. Your overall health influences how well you can heal, which is key to the success of the implant.
  2. Healthy Gums — Your gums must be healthy before you can get implants. If you have periodontal disease, it doesn’t mean you can’t have implants; however, we must treat it and get it under control before implant surgery to ensure the best outcome.
  3. Sufficient Bone Density — Dental implants require a certain amount of bone to hold them in place. If you’ve experienced bone loss, you may still be a candidate, but we may need to perform bone grafting to build up the adequate bone structure needed for implant support.
  4. Commitment to Oral Hygiene — You must commit to excellent oral hygiene and regular dental checkups after implant placement. Implants need care just like natural teeth to prevent infections around the implant site and ensure their longevity.
  5. Non-smokers — Smoking impacts the healing process after implant placement and negatively affects their long-term success. If you’re a smoker, being willing to quit—especially during healing—significantly improves your chances for implant success.
