When Should Your Child See an Orthodontist?

Many parents are curious about when their child should be evaluated for orthodontic treatment. It's an excellent question, and you may be surprised that the recommended age is between 7–9 years old.

Why so early? Read on to learn more about the American Association of Orthodontists recommendation. 

Recognizing the Right Time for an Orthodontic Evaluation

Around age seven, your child has a mix of baby and permanent teeth. If your orthodontic dentist detects an issue at this stage, it is easier to work with their natural development to correct bite and alignment issues sooner, without surgery. 

However, an orthodontic evaluation does not mean your child will need braces. This consultation provides a roadmap for future treatment and enables your dentist to closely monitor your child's growth patterns.

The Benefits of Early Orthodontic Intervention

Early orthodontic intervention offers many benefits for your child's long-term dental health. First, it can prevent the need for more invasive orthodontic treatments in the future. And detecting alignment and bite issues early often leads to less complex and shorter treatment plans.
