The most popular tooth replacement today is dental implants because they look, fit and feel like natural teeth. Dental implant surgery is safe, reliable, and comfortable in the hands of an experienced dentist and nothing to worry about.

Even so, it’s natural to feel apprehensive. Understanding what’s involved with the process can help minimize your anxiety, so here is an overview of the dental implant procedure and what to expect.

Steps for Getting a Dental Implant

Getting a dental implant is a process that takes several months. There are several steps, and your dentist in Aurora, CO, will explain what’s involved and what you can expect with each one.

You can be confident that, through each step, your dentist will inform you about what to expect and take all necessary steps to ensure your comfort and safety.

Step 1: Initial Implant Consultation

The first step for getting a dental implant is a comprehensive exam and evaluation with your dentist. This involves examining your mouth and taking digital x-rays and 3-D cone beam scans to ensure you are a good dental implant candidate

if you decide that dental implants are right for you, your dentist will create a custom treatment plan, review it with you, and schedule the dental implant surgery.

Step 2: Implant Placement and Healing

On the day of your dental implant procedure, your dentist will administer an anesthetic to ensure you remain comfortable throughout the surgery. They then make a small incision in your gum and place the implant into the jawbone.

The implant is made of titanium, a biocompatible material that will fuse with the bone and create a strong, secure foundation for your replacement tooth. This process is called osseointegration. It takes 3–6 months for the implant and bone to fuse completely, during which your dentist will monitor you to ensure everything is healing properly.

Step 3: Attaching the Implant Crown

After the implant integrates completely, a small metal post called an abutment is attached. The replacement tooth, usually a porcelain dental crown, is secured to the abutment with special dental cement.

You now have a fully functioning replacement tooth that looks, functions, and feels like the real thing. You’ll be able to smile confidently again and chew all your favorite foods just as you did before tooth loss.
