Hello! It’s Dr. Holly Baller here to share some tips and information on caring for your Invisalign® clear aligners. Proper care is crucial to ensure they work effectively and remain hygienic. Here are my best practices and cleaning tips to help maintain your Invisalign aligners throughout your treatment.
Proper Care for Invisalign Clear Aligners
Daily Cleaning Routine — It is essential to clean your Invisalign aligners each time you remove them. Use lukewarm water to remove saliva and plaque and prevent bacterial buildup. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush dedicated solely to your aligners, gently brushing them with clear, antibacterial soap. Don’t use toothpaste; it is too abrasive.
Appropriate Cleaning Solution — Choose the right cleaning products to keep your aligners clear and bacteria-free. I recommend Invisalign cleaning crystals or similar products designed specifically for clear aligners to keep them invisible and odor-free.
Storage Recommendations — When not wearing your aligners, store them in the provided Invisalign case to protect them from dirt and damage.
What to Avoid — There are a few key things to avoid to ensure your aligners stay in perfect condition:
- Don't eat or drink anything other than water while wearing your aligners. Food and drink can stain or damage them.
- Don’t expose your aligners to heat, such as hot water or direct sunlight, as this can warp their shape.
- Don't use harsh chemicals or abrasive materials to clean your aligners; they can scratch or cloud the plastic.
Regular Checkups — Regular checkups at our Aurora dental office allow us to ensure your treatment is on track and are also a perfect opportunity to ask questions about aligner care. If you notice any issues with your aligners, such as cracks or odd smells, despite cleaning, please bring them to your appointment so I can take a look.
