5 Tips for Keeping Invisalign Aligners Fresh and Clean

When you chose Invisalign clear braces to straighten your teeth, one of your reasons was probably their convenience compared to metal braces. You appreciate that, with comfortable, clear aligners that are removable and blend discreetly into your smile, they’re a much better fit for your busy lifestyle.

Yes, clear aligners are more convenient and easy to wear, but they do need proper care to keep them clean and protect your oral health. Because you wear Invisalign for extended periods during the day and while you sleep, plaque can build up on them the same as on your teeth.

Proper care for your aligners minimizes plaque buildup and keeps your breath smelling fresh.

5 Tips to Keep Your Invisalign Aligners Fresh and Clean

Here are five steps to protect your smile during Invisalign treatment.

  • Clean your trays as part of your morning oral hygiene routine. Your morning and evening oral hygiene routine should include brushing your aligner trays. Don’t use toothpaste as it’s too abrasive and can scratch your aligners; rinse them with water and brush them gently with a soft-bristled brush.
  • Rinse your trays before putting them back in your mouth. When you remove your aligners for meals, be sure to rinse them with water before putting them back in your mouth.
  • Soak your aligner trays every day. You can use regular denture cleaner or purchase Invisalign cleaning crystals to soak your aligners for 30 minutes daily. Let them soak while having a meal, so your aligners aren’t out of your mouth longer than necessary.
  • Brush your teeth before putting aligners back in. Brushing your teeth after meals is ideal for preventing food particles from getting trapped under your aligners and causing cavities.
  • Store your trays in their case when you’re not wearing them. Whenever you’re not wearing your aligners, store them in the case provided to protect them from bacteria.
